Hello.  I am the mother of an 19 month old who is allergic to eggs and milk.  We will retest her just before her 2nd birthday.  I am hopeful that she will outgrow at least one of her allergies, but until then we just do the best we can.  I currently write the blog www.milkandeggallergykid.blogspot.com where I share recipes and personal experience tidbits.

I am so excited that you posted... So now, I am not just talking to myself!

Life with a food allergic child is hard but it is managable. You must be highly organized, especially when they are young. As your child is growing, educate him/her as you go along because your ultimate goal is to train them to understand and care for themselves. My son is now 17.

At your child's age, I made flash cards with our milk ingredient words on them (think you can buy them now). Then, when we went to the grocery store, I would point to the milk words on labels. Even at home, when I opened something, I would tell him, "I read the label and it is safe"... To this day, he checks the labels at the store and again when we open something new... Good habit as some companies change ingredients.

I know you have two allergies, as we only had one, but get started now. Even if they don't read, they can memorize what it looks like...

For now we are taking a more hands-off approach with my daughter. She knows the difference b/t daddy's milk and her milk but we don't make a big deal of anything else. Our hope is that she outgrows one or both of her allergies and we won't have to teach her much about food allergies at all. However, if she continues to have food allergies past the age of 2 then we will teach her more about them. Thank you for the suggestions though.
